Privacy policy
Last updated 2 November 2026
Butterboo is an app for couples to play, plan and care together. It is run by Guruprasad Chandrahas Shetty and Riya Sumit Tanksali, Mumbai, India ("we"). This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
The short version
•
We collect only what the app needs to work for you and your partner.
•
What you share in Butterboo is visible only to you and your partner. Not to other users, and not to advertisers.
•
We don't show ads, and we don't sell or rent your data.
•
You can delete your account and your data at any time from the Me tab.
What we collect
•
Your email address, to sign you in with a one-time code.
•
Your name or nickname, so your partner sees who you are.
•
Your couple details (the date you got together, your invite code), to connect you with your partner and show your days-together counter.
•
What you add: moods, sleep status, hugs and notes, special dates, spending entries, bucket list items and answers to daily questions. This is the app: it's shared with your partner.
•
Basic technical information: device and browser type, and error reports, to keep the app secure and fix problems.
We don't collect your contacts, location, photos or microphone. If you turn on notifications, we store a notification address for that device (from your browser's push service) and which kinds of notifications you want. Turning notifications off, signing out or deleting your account removes it.
Who can see it
•
Your partner sees what you share in the app, as described on each screen. Daily question answers are shown to your partner only after they've answered too.
•
Nobody else using Butterboo can see your data.
•
Service providers who help us run Butterboo process data only on our instructions:
•
Supabase: our database and sign-in, stored in Mumbai, India.
•
Resend: sends our sign-in emails. Emails pass through servers in Tokyo, Japan.
•
Cloudflare: hosts the website and protects it from attacks.
•
GitHub: keeps our nightly backups for 30 days. Each backup is locked with a password only we have (AES-256 encryption) before it reaches GitHub, so GitHub can't read it.
•
Your browser's push service (Google for Chrome and Android, Apple for iPhone and Safari, Mozilla for Firefox): delivers notifications you've turned on. The notification text is encrypted so only your device can read it.
•
The law: we may share data if Indian law requires it, for example a valid order from a court or authority.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while your account exists. When you delete your account, we delete your profile, sign-in, notification settings and everything you added straight away. Copies in our security backups (made every night) disappear within 30 days. We keep something longer only if the law requires it. Error reports are deleted after 90 days. If you unpair, what you added stays with your partner unless you delete your account.
Your rights
Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you can:
•
see what personal data we hold about you;
•
correct or update it (your name and dates are editable in the app);
•
delete your data: Me → Delete my account;
•
withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account;
•
nominate someone to exercise these rights if you can't;
•
raise a complaint with our Grievance Officer, and if you're not satisfied, with the Data Protection Board of India.
Grievance Officer: Guruprasad Chandrahas Shetty, hello@butterboo.app. We reply within 7 days.
Children
Butterboo is for people aged 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from children.
Security
Your data is sent over encrypted connections. Our database only lets each couple see their own records. We only look at what you've added when you ask us to fix something, when it has been reported to us as harmful, or when the law requires it.
Changes
If we change this policy in an important way, we'll tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
